Though none of my characters are based solely on people from real life, Allie is certainly one that I can identify with, a girl after my own heart.

As a teenager she doesn't fit in, not with her family and not in the city...feeling weird and different, the only place she truly feels at home is with her grandparents in Wood Point, a small seaside fishing community in Nova Scotia's south shore.

There, her Gram-Gram sees her for who she is and accepts her creative, somewhat introverted nature, intuitive abilities and all. Allie prefers quiet, being outside and writing poetry instead of crowds of people and a packed social calendar, hardly even noticing boys until JD enters her life.....

Being an empath, Allie is highly sensitive to other's feelings and notices things that other people sometimes miss, receiving deep intuitive insights that often put her in uncomfortable situations wondering what the right thing to do or say is.

After one of the best years of Allie's life, things take a tragic turn, and she is quick to blame herself, deciding the only way to cope with her overwhelming feelings of guilt and shame is to run away and distract herself with school and work. As years go by she continues this trend as a strategy to squash her sixth sense but really only ends up keeping herself stuck in survival mode, unable to open her heart up fully to anyone, especially herself.....

Read about Allie's emotional journey back to herself in my first novel: turquoise.
